How Much Essential Oil is Enough? A Molecular Approach

Monday, June 20, 2016 6:26:40 PM America/Denver

(Note:  for more information on the blends mentioned in this article, visit www.aromashield.com)

Perhaps the most common question asked about using essential oils is:  How much should I use?  It's really an important question, because essential oil therapy is NOT like allopathic medical therapy.  Very minute amounts of essential oil can have profound effects on the body, much like hormones, if applied correctly and consistently.

Many of the hormones that work in the human body are supplied to the blood stream in millionths or billionths of a gram, yet these hormones provide very measurable and beneficial effects. . . . .

Sweet Orange EO: A study in profound potential

Saturday, March 26, 2016 3:00:57 PM America/Denver

There is a notion that has crept into the aromatherapy world that the more exotic an essential oil is, the more therapeutic  it is.  Orange oil demonstrates that notion is both false and expensive.

Conventional orange essential oil, like other citrus oils is not distilled, but is mechanically pressed from the rind of the fruit.   Since this mechanical process extracts molecules directly from the rind, it is especially important to use only organically grown citrus oils, since the toxins in herbicides and pesticides . . . . .

Two Misunderstood Oils: Nutmeg and Wintergreen

Wednesday, April 8, 2015 4:55:55 PM America/Denver

nutmeg on branch

Some well-meaning chemists, upon finding certain substances in essential oils, too quickly brand them as toxic without taking into consideration a) that compounds in essential oils are natural, not synthetic, b) that these natural compounds are combined with dozens, sometimes hundreds of additional compounds that influence their action, and b) that essential oils used in therapy are used in very small amounts.

This is the case with nutmeg and wintergreen.. . . . .

Are you discouraged or depressed? Try essential oils

Friday, March 6, 2015 4:35:32 PM America/Denver

Seriously, you ask?  Yes, in fact, essential oils can really help reduce discouragement and depression.  And several studies have demonstrated it.

depression

Peer reviewed research shows highly reliable indicators that certain essential oils do cause specific changes in brain function that reduce the intensity and frequency of depressing feelings.

Depression is the plague of our time, but, sadly, more and more we are discovering that pharmaceutical anti-depressants carry dangerous—sometimes fatal—side effects.

On the other hand, subjective perceptions of aromas from natural essential oils have long , , ,

Essential Oils and Winter Holidays

Saturday, December 13, 2014 12:52:08 PM America/Denver

Orange and Clove

One of the unfortunate ironies about the winter holidays is that they arrive at a time when the season for colds, flu and sore throats is in full swing.  Family get-togethers can sometimes be complicated by beginning and ending illnesses that are communicable, especially if children are involved.  For that reason, several essential oils are perfect for the holidays, not only because....

Rosemary essential oil makes your brain work better!

Monday, April 21, 2014 2:09:09 PM America/Denver

rosemary bunch

Every once in a while, a study in comes along that verifies for me again that we too often underestimate the potential value of essential oils.  It happened last month with a study involving rosemary essential oil and brain function.

This study focused on one of rosemary's primary constituents--1,8 cineole.  This compound is also a major compound in eucalyptus, ravintsara and sage, among others, and is known for its ability to dilate mucous membranes, making breathing easier.  It has also been used to improve circulation.

But this study went in a different direction.  The question it tried to answer was: ......

The whole process of sugar metabolism in the human body is an enormously complex and critical one. It is one of the most vital and delicate balances the body must maintain.

The question is sometimes asked whether essential oils can play a meaningful role in maintaining this delicate balance of glucose levels in the body. The answer to this question is not simple, but some ideas on what might be possible are suggested below. To grasp the role that essential oils might play . . . .

For years, several of the most prominent essential oils companies in America insisted that organic certification was not required with essential oils, because the distillation process automatically eliminated herbicide and pesticide toxins.

Why Aroma Shield Carries 2 Types of Frankincense

Monday, February 10, 2014 4:16:40 PM America/Denver

Some have noticed that Aroma Shield carries two different species of frankincense:  one is the well-known Boswellia carteri  and the other is less familiar--Boswellia serrata.  Why carry two different kinds?

In studying the research, we observed that Boswellia serrata  was more frequently used in studies on the anti-inflammatory effects of frankincense.  Although the carteri and serrata species are very similar, the serrata version appears to have a more significant anti-inflammatory property, making it ideal for . . .

Accumulating Research on Frankincense

Friday, January 10, 2014 8:36:17 AM America/Denver

resinFrankincense resin and essential oil has been tested in scores of scientific studies, with consistently positive results. One of the reasons frankincense is so often researched in clinical trials and lab studies is that there is an unusually long history of traditional healing benefits associated with its use.

Earliest records go back to ancient Egypt with indications that Frankincense was highly valued by the upper classes both as a physical and a spiritual aid for an almost endless list of physical problems. Well-known reference is made to Frankincense in the Old Testament as a key ingredient in temple and sacrificial ceremonies of the Jews; and in the New Testament as a gift offered to the Christ child by wise men from the East.

Historical data shows that during biblical times the value of Frankincense was greater than the value of gold. Further history substantiates that enormous . . . .

Obamacare Won't Stop Runaway Medical Costs

Saturday, June 16, 2012 1:22:03 PM America/Denver

health costs

(But essential oils can help soften the blow....)

A recent federal government report confirmed that even if Obamacare becomes law, health care cost increases will continue unabated for at least the next eight years.  The report, released in early June, projected that cost increases are going to be almost identical with or without Obamacare, ranging from 6 to 8% per year.

This revelation only adds to the worry that our medical system, like our political system, is beginning to falter. . . .

Essential Oils and Insomnia

Monday, May 21, 2012 4:11:20 PM America/Denver

lady sleeping2

Insomnia is becoming epidemic in our stress-filled world, and the prescription remedies that are offered by pharmaceutical companies have significant risks of negative side effects and even addiction.  More and more people are discovering that essential oils can give them that extra 'edge' they need to fall asleep when they need to....and to stay asleep until morning.

Among all the oils mentioned as being sedative enough to induce sleep--(the medical term for this property is 'soporific.')--the most common are:  . . . .
